Magpie Estate Barossa Valley, Australia New Arrival Offer

Bit quiet on the Magpie front, although by the time you read this I will be in Australia on my annual Magpie Estate sales tour, with just a few days at the winery.
2007 was a small vintage with no super premiums made, in fact will have to wait for the 2009's for a full compliment of wines.
So here are a few new releases, the brand new Petite Sirah supercharged Thief Rosé 2009! and the long awaited Beak Semillon-Sauvignon 2009, alongside the last few cases we had in the winery of the delicious Call Bag Mourvedre-Grenache 2006, one of our best, and the lovely supple, spicy Black Sock Mourvedre 2006. Also a chance to buy some of the fabulous limited production Election Shiraz 2006 at a very special price. Barossa Shiraz does not get much better than this!!

Magpie Estate 'The Beak' Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Magpie Estate 'The Beak' Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Australia

At long last the new 'Beak' white has arrived. A blend of Barossa Semillon with Padthaway Sauvignon Blanc, and just a hint of Barossa Chardonnay. Unoaked, attractive honeyed nose with hints of lanolin and fresh citrus fruits. It's dry, crisp and tangy with good weight, slightly smokey Semillon and grassy, tangy citrus Sauvignon. Fresh and lively it's got good complexity, and will drink for 2-3 years.

Magpie Estate 'The Thief' Mourvedre-Grenache Rosé 2009

Magpie Estate 'The Thief' Mourvedre-Grenache Rosé 2009

Australia

The latest Thief, there is no 2010 as crops of these two varieties was so low. Saignee method so free run juice extracted after just 48 hours on skins. This year at blending in January i thought the wine needed an extra something, now we had these two barrels of Petite Sirah, fearsome stuff !! Great fruit but big tannins. I thought a touch of this might just liven up the wine, and it did, so just 1% Petite Sirah, amazing how much difference it can make. 52% Mourvedre, 47% Grenache. 13.2% alcohol. Ripe raspberry and red cherry fruit on the nose. It's a fairly crisp rosé with redcurrant and raspberry fruit, good acidity and a dry spicy finish. It's very versatile food wise. Works well with spicy dishes, salads and of course grilled and barbecued fish and white meats.

Magpie Estate 'The Call Bag' Mourvedre-Grenache 2006

Magpie Estate 'The Call Bag' Mourvedre-Grenache 2006

Australia

We have a new shipment from Magpie Estate and i have mopped up the last stocks of a couple of prior vintages. This is looking really good now. Very limited stocks. A blend of 56% Mourvedre and 44% Grenache. From 5 different growers. We call this our 'Estate Wine' first made in 1993. Aged in nearly all older oak. Maybe 10% new oak. We use 500 litre puncheons as well as our usual 300 litre hogsheads. Rich plum and black cherry on the nose with cinnamon and clove spice, a touch of pepper too. It's rich and full with warm spicy fruit. Liquorice, oak and spice. It's already drinking well, and it is very much in keeping with the style. For drinking now and over the next 5 years. Very versatile food wine too. "The 2006 Call Bag is a blend of 56% Mourvedre and 44% Grenache. It has an enticing perfume of underbrush, mineral, wild cherry, and blackberry leading to a glossy, ripe, intensely flavored wine with enough structure to evolve for 2-3 years. Drink this intriguing blend from 2010 to 2018" 91 points Jay Miller Robert Parkers Wine Advocate Feb 2009

Magpie Estate 'The Black Sock' Mourvedre 2006

Magpie Estate 'The Black Sock' Mourvedre 2006

Australia

Again I have taken the last 12 cases of this wine that is showing really well at present, 2006 was an excellent vintage for Mourvedre This wine has become a real favourite which is great as both myself and Rolf are great Mourvedre/Mataro fans. Slightly different blend this year. No Grenache and around 8% Shiraz, so our most Mourvedre dominated release yet. Aged for the first 10 months in around 10% new oak. We then looked at the wine in January 2007 and felt a little newer oak would help so 40% went into 1 year old French oak puncheons and 40% in 2 year old American oak puncheons, the rest into 2 year old oak barrels. Shiraz was blended at the end to give it some weight and add a little complexity. Deep in colour and quite savoury on the nose. Black fruits with meat, liquorice, and dried herbs. On the palate it follows a similar path. Juicy black fruits with some red berry lifted characters. Meat, spice and black pepper, liquorice and creamy oak, with good acidity. It's long, rich and quite creamy. Round and deep and really appealing. Drink over the next 5-8 years. "The 2006 Black Sock Mourvedre is purple-colored with a nose of wood smoke, mineral, forest floor, blueberry, and Asian spices. Already revealing some complexity, this sweet, savory effort has a firm finish and the structure to evolve for 3-5 years. It will be in its prime from 2012 to 2022" 91 points Jay Miller Robert Parkers Wine Advocate Feb 2009

Magpie Estate 'The Election' Shiraz 2006

Magpie Estate 'The Election' Shiraz 2006

Australia

The new sale price is applied for case purchases at £280/12 or £140 per 6. Normal would be £180 per 6.

We have just recieved some more of this fabulous Shiraz that is drinking superbly, though no hurry at all, a 2001 drunk recently was delicious and still pretty youthfull. So as we have healthier stocks than necesarry a special price, note their is no 2007. 2006 proved to be a very good Shiraz vintage. We made both Malcolm and Election Shiraz which of course we only release in top vintages. Our biggest volume Election to date with just over 400 cases produced. It's a barrel selection of our top Shiraz that fit the bill. In fact 10% of the blend is one barrel of Malcolm that just did not fit that wine. Coming from four growers with around 67% in new oak. 50% of that was new French and 50% new American oak. The balance in 2 year old barrels. Lovely rich black cherry and black berry on the nose with spice and toasty oak. It's big and rich with lovely sweet black fruits. Black cherry and cassis with spice and toasty oak. Liquorice and a touch of meat too with ripe tannins. Really quite perfumed with loads of sweet fruit that makes the oak take second stage. Long with good acidity and sure to age. "The 2006 The Election Shiraz is a saturated purple color with a bouquet of damp earth, mineral, spice box, leather, blueberry, and blackberry. Elegant yet powerful on the palate, it has superb depth and concentration, complex flavors, a silky texture, and 5-7 years of aging potential. Drink this high-class Shiraz from 2014 to 2028." 92 Points Jay Miller Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Feb 2009
